Gambling in Australia during COVID-19

2,000 people were surveyed across Australia during June-July 2020. 

Key experts who work in gambling research, regulation, policy and treatment were interviewed.

Findings from the study will help to inform the development and implementation of policy and practice responses to prevent and reduce gambling-related harms in Australia.

Trends in online behaviour and technology usage: ACMA consumer survey 2020

This quantitative consumer research was undertaken to further understand trends in consumer take-up and usage of communications and media services.

The Social Research Centre (SRC) conducted the survey using their probability-based panel, Life in Australia™. 

2,009 surveys were completed from 9–21 June 2020, representative of the Australian population aged 18 years and over.

UKGC Publishes Report on Online Gambling Behaviour after Relaxing COVID-19 Restrictions

The UK Gambling Commission has published data showing how easing COVID-19 lockdown measures has impacted online gambling behaviour.

The data reflects March plus 3 full months of lockdown in April, May and June.

The data was collected from the largest online operators.

These are the preliminary results from Wave 1 cross-sectional survey.

2019-20 Victorian gaming expenditure data released

Every July the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) publishes the annual gaming expenditure data for the previous financial year.

The data outlines total gaming expenditure and gaming venue information, including venue classification and electronic gaming machine numbers for Victoria.

Statistics for 2019-20 have now been released.

This paper reports on a study undertaken by the Centre for the Advancement of Best Practices at The Responsible Gambling Council (Canada).

The study examined the emerging impact of COVID-19 on gambling during the first 6 weeks of emergency measures in Ontario, Canada.

A cross-sectional online survey of 2005 gamblers, including a sub-sample of 1,081 online gamblers (age 18 years and older), was administered to assess risky gambling behaviours and motivations, financial impacts from COVID-19, the influence of COVID-19 on online gambling, mental health concerns and substance use.

Gambling Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic Among European Regular Sports Bettors: An Empirical Study

This study is first to investigate the behaviour of a sample of online sports bettors before and after COVID19 measures were put in place by European governments. 

The findings suggest that there was a significant decrease in the amount of money wagered by sports bettors during the COVID-19 pandemic and that sports bettors did not switch to playing more online casino games.

There was also a significant reduction in playing online casino games among sports bettors.
