Reducing the Harm Caused by Gambling: Is the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation (VRGF) effectively reducing the severity of gambling harm?

This report from the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office (VAGO) was tabled in the Victorian Parliament on 18 March 2021.

The audit examined whether the VRGF is achieving its intended outcomes and impacts, including through:

  • understanding gambling harm;
  • prevention programs; and
  • treatment services.

VAGO made eight recommendations, all of which have been accepted.

This paper presents estimates of the prevalence of gambling participation, annual gambling expenditure and gambling-related problems among Victorians aged 18+. It is based on Wave 15 of the national Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey. 

Exploring Online Patterns of Play: Interim Report

This research was commissioned by UK GambleAware in order to improve understanding of the online gambling market. The research questions that drove the research were:

  • What are the basic patterns of play within online gambling?
  • How do these patterns of play vary for different types of people?
  • How do patterns of play vary among different products and characteristics?
  • What types of behaviours are associated with problem or at-risk gambling (e.g. credit cards, reverse withdrawals)?

The authors provide evidence in the areas of patterns of betting, patterns of gaming and patterns of interaction between betting and gaming. They conclude with safer gambling tools and interventions.

Gambling behaviour in 2020: Findings from the quarterly telephone survey

This statistical release covers the quarterly gambling participation and problem gambling prevalence data for the year to December 2020, as well as reporting on respondents’ perceptions of trust, crime, and attitudes towards gambling.

The year to December 2020, which the data is based upon and reflects, has been an unique year, with the arrival of COVID-19. The various lockdown rules and restrictions throughout 2020 have brought about significant consumer behavioural change and clearly have also had a major impact on the gambling industry.

Racing Australia has published the latest edition of the Australian racing fact book. Racing Australia Fact book: A Guide to the Racing Industry in Australia 2019–2020 outlines the key results and statistics from the Australian thoroughbred sector.

The fact book includes wagering data on thoroughbred racing and harness racing.

NSW Youth Gambling Study 2020

The NSW Office of Responsible Gambling (ORG) commissioned this study into gambling and simulated gambling amongst young people aged 12-17 years in NSW. The study aims to increase understanding of gambling engaged in by young people in NSW in order to prevent and reduce gambling-related harm.

Evidence indicates that deposit limit tools should avoid presenting people with arbitrarily high denominations. This paper details the first of two field trials to determine whether reducing the numerical anchors that people see when setting deposit limits could in-turn impact gambling behaviours.

Data shows impact of Covid-19 in October 2020

The Gambling Commission has published further data showing how the renewed tightening of COVID-19 lockdown measures has impacted gambling behaviour in Great Britain. The data reflects the period between March and October, inclusive, and covers both online and in-person gambling.

Every Customer Counts: Consultation Report - Use of credit cards for gambling transactions

In late 2019 the Australian Banking Association (ABA) sought community views on the use of credit cards for gambling. The consultation used a range of methods to understand community and stakeholder views about financial institutions allowing their credit card products to be used for online gambling and the role of banks in mitigating gambling related harm.
