The Effect of Gambling Marketing & Advertising on Children, Young People & Vulnerable Adults

This interim report, commissioned by GambleAware (UK), looked at the influences of gambling marketing and advertising, its tone and content and potential impact.

It also sought to identify specific themes and features of such advertising that children, young people and vulnerable adults are particularly susceptible to.

The report includes recommendations for further consideration.

UK Gambling Commission Industry Statistics: Oct 2017 to Sept 2018

The UKGC gambling statistics are published twice a year - in May and November. These latest statistics show that despite a marginal decline across the wider gambling industry, the online gambling sector continues to grow. 

Following their review of the online gambling sector in 2018, UKGC have implemented new rules to strengthen age and ID verification checks, as well as working with partners in financial institutions to develop the role they can play to protect vulnerable consumers.

Gambling Prevalence in South Australia (2018): Final Report

The 2018 survey aimed to provide an updated estimate of problem gambling prevalence, as well as exploring the nature and prevalence of gambling activities undertaken by South Australians.

A notable finding of this report was that those who gambled on the internet during the past 12 months were much more likely to be classified as at-risk gamblers (9.6%) than non-internet gamblers (3.2%).  

Associations between loot box use, problematic gaming and gambling, and gambling related cognitions

This University of British Columbia study tests relationships between gaming involvement, engagement with loot boxes, and their associations with disordered gambling and gambling-related cognitions.  

Results demonstrate that beside the surface similarity of loot boxes to gambling, loot box engagement is correlated with gambling beliefs and problematic gambling behaviour in adult gamers. 

Fewer Australians Gambling

Roy Morgan Research

New data from Roy Morgan shows that over the last decade there has been a large drop in the proportion of Australians that gamble.

There has been a drop from 64.7% of the population in 2008 to 47.9% in December 2018.

Gambling is less popular with younger people, and is declining across all age groups. All gambling categories are declining.

Progress on Gambling Harm Reduction 2010 to 2017: NZ

This New Zealand report focuses on achievements in the prevention and minimisation of gambling harm from 2010 to 2017.

The report shows that progress has been made in reducing gambling harm and inequalities. 

Progress has also been made across all of the 11 objectives set out in the Ministry's integrated Strategy in a number of the areas, although challenges to further progress have been identified.

Gambling in Suburban Australia: study report 2019

This study explores how the characteristics of local neighbourhoods and gambling activity relate.

The particular focus of the study is on electronic gambling machines (pokies), and the venues that host them.

Gambling Participation in 2018: Behaviour, Awareness & Attitudes

This report presents annual estimates of gambling behaviour in Great Britain in 2018.

It is the Gambling Commission's regular tracker of gambling participation.

The datasets cover the past 4 weeks, including: 

  • participation rate; 
  • online gambling behaviour; 
  • consumer awareness of gambling management tools; and
  • perceptions and attitudes towards gambling.

2018 Survey Report: Loot Boxes & Simulated Gambling in Games

In October and November 2018 the Australian Department of Communication and the Arts conducted a survey relating to loot boxes and simulated gambling.
